Three Oaks.

F.O.R. Annual Wildflower Hike - Year Two

Not many wildflowers in this particular location in the Central Valley. A nice hike anyway...way better than a day behind the computer. This is the Deer Creek Hills Preserve near Rancho Murieta, CA. Unfortunately, there is no public access. To see this area you must go on a docent led, private hike. Go somewhere else.

Serene Float on the Lower Sac.

We did a nine mile float from Jelly's Ferry to Bend Bridge. This stretch of the river is relatively quiet compared to further north, only because the fishing isn't as good. But it is much, much more scenic. Hopefully, the fishing will stay slow down here so that the crowds stay away as well.

Our ride.

Our captain. (It's only March and the farmer tan is going strong.)

Our stowaway.

Mount Lassen in the distance.

One of my new favorite trees -- the gigantic black oak at the mouth of Inks Creek.

From another angle. There are thousands of oaks in the Central Valley--this is surely one of the most impressive.

We camped at Massacre Flat. It is not normally this green.

Hangin out.

Behind camp was a great oak woodland.

And above camp a great butte with views up and downstream. Upstream...

Downstream...

Across stream.

The whole panorama. With Tuscan Buttes in the distance.

More oaks.

Rocks.

Rocks and flowers.

Perfect weekend.

Coming home from the river...

I saw these guys.

PS First day of 2008 on the South Fork American--and it was a good one.
